JAKARTA, 22 May 2025 – In celebration of its 30th anniversary in Indonesia, Sun Life Indonesia held Sun Life Volunteer Day as part of its global Hoops+Health campaign, in collaboration with Beyond Sport. The initiative took place at SDN Cilandak Timur 03 in South Jakarta and involved Sun Life Indonesia employees volunteering on-site. Children participated in a basketball coaching clinic and educational sessions on healthy and balanced nutrition.
This program reflects Sun Life Indonesia’s concern over the limited access children must open spaces and child-friendly sports facilities in urban areas. According to the Jakarta Statistics Agency (BPS DKI Jakarta, 2023), only around 10% of the city’s total area is designated as green open space—far below the 30% target mandated by law. This lack of space significantly hinders children’s opportunities to stay active in their daily environment.
The 2022 Indonesian Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Adolescents shows that only 19% of children and teenagers in Indonesia meet the recommended levels of physical activity, earning a grade of F for daily physical activity. This inactivity contributes to the increasing prevalence of sedentary lifestyles from a young age. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children aged 5–17 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day, yet global data reveals that only 1 in 5 children in Southeast Asia meets this benchmark.
One concrete solution is to bring sports facilities directly to where children spend most of their time—schools. This is the driving force behind Sun Life Volunteer Day at SDN Cilandak Timur 03, which is part of Sun Life’s global campaign.
“Through Sun Life Volunteer Day, we aim to strengthen our commitment to supporting Indonesian families in leading healthier lives. Schools are a strategic starting point for driving lifestyle change. We believe that hands-on engagement, fun education, and equal access to sports facilities can inspire children to grow up active, healthy, and full of enthusiasm,” said Kah Jing Lee, Chief Client Officer of Sun Life Indonesia.
In addition to basketball sessions led by professional coaches and employee volunteers, children also participated in interactive games focused on balanced nutrition, the importance of breakfast, and choosing healthy snacks. These activities were designed to foster a love of learning through enjoyable and practical education.
The Hoops+Health campaign is part of Sun Life’s global initiative to raise awareness and improve access to healthy lifestyles through sports, especially for communities with limited resources. In Indonesia, the campaign is a key part of Sun Life’s 30th anniversary celebration and its mission to help millions of Indonesian families achieve financial security and live healthier lives. Previously, Sun Life Indonesia donated basketball equipment to dozens of schools to support the availability of child-friendly sports facilities
Sun Life Indonesia remains committed to running sustainable social programs that support the physical, mental, and financial well-being of the community. Sun Life Volunteer Day serves as a reminder that meaningful change often begins with small, collective steps.
