Celebrating 30 Years in Indonesia, Sun Life Indonesia Donates Basketball Equipment to 30 Schools through Hoops + Health Program

JAKARTA, 9th May 2025 – In celebration of 30 years of supporting Indonesian families, Sun Life Indonesia has relaunched its Hoops + Health program in collaboration with Beyond Sport. This year’s initiative begins with the donation of basketball equipment to 30 schools across various regions—reaffirming Sun Life’s commitment to empowering the next generation to lead more active, healthy, and competitive lives.

According to the 2022 Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance, fewer than 20% of children and adolescents aged 6–17 in Asia—including Indonesia—meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Indonesia received an “F” rating for overall physical activity, highlighting the urgent need to expand access to sports and recreational facilities.

Low physical activity in children is associated with increased risks of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, mental health challenges, and other long-term health issues. In recent years, Indonesia has seen a significant rise in obesity rates. Recent data reveals that approximately 1 in 3 adults in Indonesia are obese. The Ministry of Health reported adult obesity prevalence at 21.8% in 2018, which rose to 28.7% by 2023. These concerning trends reinforce the importance of promoting active lifestyles from an early age.

“As part of our 30th anniversary, we are proud to make a meaningful contribution to Indonesia’s future,” said Kah Jing Lee, Chief Client Officer of Sun Life Indonesia. “Through Hoops + Health, we aim to ensure that every Indonesian child has the opportunity to move, play, and grow into a healthy and confident individual. This reflects our ongoing commitment to building healthier communities wherever we operate.”

Under Hoops + Health, Sun Life Indonesia is donating not only equipment—including basketballs, hoops, vests, and cones—but also offering Training of Trainers (ToT) sessions for community-based coaches. This initiative is designed to create lasting impact by equipping more children with the guidance they need to lead active and healthy lives.

Launched in 2023, Hoops + Health is a regional initiative that uses basketball to enhance the physical and mental well-being of children and youth across six Asian markets: Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore. The program focuses on three key pillars: expanding access to physical activity by revitalizing sports facilities and donating equipment, engaging communities through coach training and health education, and inspiring youth by providing free basketball training sessions.

“Building a brighter future for the next generation requires collaboration from all sectors, and we are proud to play a role in driving positive change. Sun Life has committed CAD 2.5 million to this initiative, with the goal of reaching over 45,000 children across Asia by the end of 2025,” Kah Jing concluded.
